Personio Pulse: 6 tips to support employees’ mental health in tough times

?? Tip #1 – Offer empathy and flexibility?

We all deal with challenging situations differently. Jonas’ first tip is to show empathy and offer conversations in which emotions, thoughts and fears can find their own space. In addition, support flexibility in the form of short breaks and adjustable working hours.

?? Tip #2 – Make a clear, collective statement?

Unite as a team to support those affected by crises. By setting the tone, you can counteract feelings of helplessness. Aim to lead by example, fostering meaningful action and working together to make a positive impact.?

?? Tip #3 – Train your leaders?

HR has a vital role to play when times are tough, but this begins with strong individual leadership.?

Leaders are culture multipliers, so train and support them to embed mindful stress management throughout your organisation.?

?? Tip #4 – Look after yourself, too!?

  • Turn down the news: Consuming constant news updates can be draining. Begin and end your days positively by limiting news consumption. ??
  • Create a supportive environment: Surround yourself with uplifting people, stay active, and enjoy nature.???
  • Focus on control: Concentrate on what you can control. Let go of what you can't.????
  • Release responsibility: Recognise that global injustice is not your fault.???
  • Embrace your feelings: Accept fears and anxieties as a normal part of life. It’s okay to not always feel your best.???
  • Push pause: Give yourself permission to take time off for your own mental health.???
  • Access professional help: If you’re struggling, don’t suffer in silence.???

?? Tip #5 – Give peace of mind?

Make it clear that you prioritise your employees’ safety and good health. Clearly communicate company policies such as assistance packages for employees affected by crises.?

?? Tip #6 – Call in the experts when needed?

Consider using mental health professionals to support employees during times of extreme stress. Advantages to this approach include:

  • Confidentiality: What is discussed in a counselling session stays there. There are no conflicts of interest, and concerns and thoughts can be expressed freely without straining organisational relationships. ??
  • Professionalism: It’s good to speak with close friends or colleagues, but trained experts can make well-informed recommendations and offer the right support in cases of psychological stress.???
  • Targeted support: Experts can respond to individual situations, offering tailored assistance beyond generic tips. ??
