1 年Comment 2 of 2: For the life of me, I don't understand how these "System" level and "Message" level instructions are different from earlier. We were able to provide such "conditioning" prompts even earlier - the only difference was that there was no explicit switch to turn on in settings earlier. Maybe I am not using this properly now. Is there a detailed primer anywhere, which will help us use this new feature correctly and completely? I want to understand if this was not possible prior to this feature and the problem sets that are addressed with this new feature. I checked the OpenAI documentation, but could not find much.

1 年Comment 1 of 2: I turned on the 'custom instructions" option in my settings and dived in to understand what is ground-breaking about this new feature. With some prodding, GPT plus suggested usage guidelines: How to Use Custom Instructions System Level Instructions: These are high-level instructions that guide the assistant's behavior throughout the conversation. For example, a user can instruct the assistant to "Speak like Shakespeare" or "You are an assistant that speaks like Yoda". The assistant will then generate responses in the specified style for the duration of the conversation. Message Level Instructions: These instructions are embedded within a user message and guide the assistant's behavior for that particular message. For example, in a message like {"role": "user", "content": 'Translate the following English text to French: "{text}"'}, the instruction is to translate the provided text into French. User Message as Instruction: In some cases, the user message itself serves as an instruction. For example, in a message like {"role": "user", "content": "Tell me a joke"}, the instruction is to tell a joke.
