PERSONAL – What Am I Being Coached On?

I wanted to take a few minutes to share how I approach being coached. A little background on this: I first started being coached in 2021 around the same time that I first pursued training to become a coach. My first coach, Richard, made a lasting impression to the point that I still work with him today. I have tried other coaches, but found they lack the relational history that makes it so easy to work with Richard. He has been patient, purposeful, and consistent in holding me accountable by focusing on one series goal at a time. A series goal is a goal that you, the client, consistently focus on during multiple sessions with a coach.

So what am I currently working on with Richard?

Those who know me know that I am passionate about leading my family well. My wife, two sons and daughter are important not only to what I do, but how I do it.? At the end of last year, a fellow coach recommended a book that outlined a process for leading a business. Richard has been helping me put that into action within my family, because it turns out those same principles that lead a business well can also be applied in the family. Here is series goal that resulted from our first session of the series together: In the next six months our family will have a clear set of core values, a mission statement, and a vision that guides our decisions over the next 10 years.

We are now three sessions in, and here is how it’s gone:

Session One – The focus was on forming our family’s core values. The goal was to have a meeting with my wife and then with the kids to find out what we wanted our core values to be. After following through on those action steps, we discovered our family’s core values are Fun, Faithfully Serve, Rest, Adventure, Growth, and Encouragement. Each of these represent an aspect of our family’s personality. This list has already helped our family form the attitude we want to have as we interact with each other and the rest of the world. I wrote a speech for them explaining how we expect to live out each core value and shared it over dinner with them. Session one goals met.

Session Two – Form a family mission statement. This one was a bit trickier. I had to discover with Richard’s help why I wanted a family mission statement. I want to show love to my wife and kids by intentionally communicating about how we interact. Goals from this session: Research why a mission statement is important, be able to explain why I want a mission statement for our family, and form a mission statement with my wife and kids. Martin Family Mission: Walk Truth, Show Grace, Live Freedom. Session two goals met.

Session Three – Make a plan for our family to have a vision statement. By this time, I find myself getting into a groove. I have researched the idea of a vision statement and believe that I can explain its importance. I begin to notice trends through our communication as a married couple. I made a plan for the conversation, and it’s scheduled for this week. Make sure to pray over the conversation before we have it. ?

This week I will meet with Richard to tell him how it went and to focus on next steps.

Richard had to help me come up with my series goal. What would your series goal be?

I equip humble, purposeful, passionate family leaders as they seek to make Christ known through their homes and businesses. Reach out to me here for a free 1-hour session.
