I wish I knew then what I know now. If you could talk to yourself when you first became a leader, what advice would you give yourself? For me, I would say “Jeff, to be a great leader you need to decide and live your personal values first”. Your personal values guide your leadership behavior, which ultimately determines company culture. Don’t let someone else decide for you what kind of leader you want to be. That is for you to decide. Leadership carries a great responsibility and knowing your personal values will guide your way to becoming the great leader you are meant to be.
I finally learned in my leadership career that knowing who you are and your non-negotiables help you withstand the storms of leadership. I also know now that your personal values – not company values – determine your company’s culture. You don’t leave your personal values, either good or bad, at the front door and put on the company values. Which, by the way, nobody knows. I see it like this:
What are your non-negotiable personal values?

5 年Yes, personal values matters. A leader must be self aware, know thyself and be true to thyself. Personal Values will help to anchor the leader and serve as moral compass to assist in distinguishing between what is fair and equitable, what is right or wrong.

5 年Great post Jeff. The ability to lead others is a gift and comes from within, including one’s personal values, beliefs, moral character and judgment. Personal values is at the core of a successful leader. The ability to share one’s values with others that contribute to the organization’s vision and mission cannot be understated.

5 年I would put a slightly different spin on it - the personal values of a company's organizational leadership drive the values of the organization, which drives the culture. If you're fortunate enough to work for an organization where the personal values of the leadership team are positively aligned, a positive culture will follow. But if there is value-driven conflict at the top it will trickle down through the staff and the company culture will suffer. You want constructive dialog and debate about the business, but when there is misalignment on values the discussion loses focus, decisions are far more difficult, and buy-in is limited.

5 年Morning Jeff, a few months ago I experienced he Strength Deployment Inventory where personal values were at the very heart of how we behave and react to situations. Valuing people’s relationships and trust was one of my strong values. If you can find a company or organisation that has values that align with your own then you are onto a winner ??
