Personal Security - Plan to Reduce Risk

The shocking murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson highlights the need for companies, their board of directors and executive management to evaluate and implement security measures. Denial of risk, preferring the freedom of movement, and security service costs should be calculated but not eliminate some level of protection. The airport security experience prior to September 11, 2001 was moderate and blasé. It is an unfortunate reality that security services and costs increase after tragic events, and sometimes inanely discussed for the first time.

Travel and attendance at meetings is necessary, but organizations need to assess any risks associated:

·?????? Is the agenda available to the public where they now have sensitive details (date/location or attendee list)?

·?????? Are any of the attendees, their organizations/affiliations, or meeting content considered controversial?

·?????? What is the level of access control/target hardening – are attendees credentialed/ screened, and is there adequate number of officers assigned for attendee/VIP security?

·?????? Consult with company HR/Legal to identify employee behavior/performance issues that will assist in blocking unwanted attendees.

·?????? Are Executives and VIP’s afforded trained EP operator(s) familiar with associated risks and proficient in defensive/de-escalation tactics, first aid, and EP driving skills?

·?????? Is the meeting located near a political, social, or sporting event with large, diverse crowds that could draw protestors, criminals, or a media presence?

·?????? Has a security plan identified evacuation routes/establishing comms with on-site security mangers, law enforcement and EMS services?

Functioning in a free society comes with a cost of increased risk. The goal should always be recognizing, preparing, and reducing vulnerabilities to maintain the protection of employees, offices, and organizational reputation. A successful security program relies on effective Planning, Adaptability, Resources and most importantly, Communication and Trust between the C-Suite and security team.
