A Personal Plea to Transform Futures: Let's Build Opportunities Together!

A Personal Plea to Transform Futures: Let's Build Opportunities Together!

Today, I want to share a deeply personal mission that has become increasingly close to my heart – one that involves encouraging my own daughter to explore the incredible possibilities within the construction industry.

As a parent, I've come to realise the immense potential that lies within our younger generation, particularly in fields that often go overlooked. Recently, I had the privilege of being involved with a local school, working to reshape students' perceptions about the UK construction industry. It was eye-opening to witness the transformation in their outlook as they began to see the diverse and fulfilling career paths available to them.

In my journey, I've pondered why more parents and teachers aren't actively championing the benefits of working in the built environment. With this in mind, I want to issue a call to action to all professionals within the construction sector. It's time for us to actively engage with our local communities, schools, and colleges, and make a concerted effort to change the narrative.

Let's Build Opportunities Together: A Call to Action!

  • Personal Connection: As parents and professionals, we have the power to influence and guide the choices of the next generation. Share your own experiences with your children and encourage them to consider the vast and rewarding careers that construction offers.
  • Community Engagement: I urge each one of you to get involved in your local communities. Offer your insights, share success stories, and mentor students who are contemplating their career paths. Let's break down the stereotypes and showcase the diverse and dynamic nature of the construction industry.
  • School Partnerships: My recent experience with a local school was a testament to the impact we can make when we actively engage with educational institutions. I encourage you to reach out to schools and colleges in your area, offering your expertise and insights to help shape the future workforce.

Question for Reflection: Should We Embrace Primary Schools Too?

As we embark on this journey, I find myself questioning whether we should extend our outreach to primary schools. Planting the seeds of curiosity early on can significantly influence a child's perception of the world and their potential career paths. What are your thoughts on embracing primary schools in our efforts to transform perceptions about the construction industry?

Together, we can create a ripple effect that transforms not only individual lives but also the landscape of the construction industry. Let's build a future where every child, including my daughter, sees the boundless opportunities waiting for them in construction.

Tamlyn, always inspiring! ?? Plenty of other inspirational people have joined the conversation too! Happy to take up the challenge to spread the word about construction careers in schools. The Children of today appear to have been brainwashed into thinking that they must go to University and that having a trade/being in construction is beneath them. We will only change the mindsets about the industry by doing our part, together (rather than moaning about the skills shortage and doing nothing). The industry is full of vibrant, passionate people, but is perilously close to a skills shortage disaster - it would be great to inspire some new blood into the industry.

Tamlyn, From personal experience I believe we should be talking to primary schools. We need to open their minds to the wide possibilities on the construction sector, before the prejudices of others are instilled in the young minds!

I really like the idea of getting careers people at schools to understand what’s available in the industry. I’m also a STEM Ambassador and find it horrifying how many schools and colleges have no idea of the varied careers construction has to offer. I have lost count of the times teachers have said to me after I have presented to students “wow I didn’t realise there were so many opportunities in the construction industry”. However, I also temper this with the fact that I know how hard the industry can be, particularly if you are a woman. It’s the reason I started writing my book, as I cannot keep encouraging people into the industry without also doing something to fix it. The industry can be tough and there are still sadly some out of date practices towards people that in some parts of the industry leave them feeling marginalised and very often women simply leave as it’s too hard. I have undertaken allot of research on this and feel it has to be a focused two prong attack at not only encouraging people in but more importantly changing the culture so that they stay and are not bullied or harrassed. I have been in the industry for 30 years and while it is changing it’s far too slow so I hope everyone works to change this.

Hi Tamlyn, Looks like we have a lot of shared synergies. Would love to host a visit to our Constructionarium site when you have some time. If you've not come across our work before, we provide experiential learning to students studying built environment courses through a residential field trip, where they build scaled replicas of iconic projects. Please feel free to drop me an email so we can arrange - [email protected]. Best wishes Julia
