The Personal Penguin

The Personal Penguin

I keep thinking of just ONE more vegetable or animal – as if there weren’t already enough in my Management Vegetables book!?

Anway,

here’s the Personal Penguin, who gives you advice on what to do to make your career more secure in uncertain times (e.g. possible recession around the corner, A.I. coming around the corner fast, etc):

?

P.E.N.G.U.I.N.

Plan B – always have at least one backup plan in case your position, employer or your industry runs into difficulties.

?

Go the Extra mile at work, help every colleague and customer and especially your boss at every opportunity – over deliver whenever you can. Volunteer to help whenever something is in your area of knowledge, and then do a gret job. ?You’ll be the last one they cut, you’ll get recommended, …and you’ll enjoy your work more.

?

Networking – collect people.? Anyone interesting or who has possibilities, make sure you talk to them, find out about them, get their contact details and keep in contact.? Even just connecting on linkedin is good, or maybe adding them to your email newsletter or joining theirs, sending them the occasional message by linkedin or email if you see something interesting and think of them.? The more contacts the safer you are and the more likely to get offered something great.

?

?

General AND special – this is the idea of being T-shaped: have one thing you are really good at, but also be a generalist who can help with anything.? Both the depth and the breadth require a certain amount of reading and self-development but that’s a fun process so it’s fine.

?

?

Up to date CV – always have it ready, not just so you can apply for a job quicker, but for your psychology – you feel stronger if there is no barrier, and if you know your CV is looking pretty good.? You’re more likely to look, and more likely to ask, if you have it ready and waiting.

?

?

Ikigai – if you know what your life purpose is then you’re more likely to find it, and less likely to settle. And if you’re doing something that you love and that you’re good at then you’re more likely to be successful enough at it to be secure, even in tough times.

?

?

New – growth and learning.? By this I mean what are the areas of your work that are new and growing, for example artificial intelligence, or doing some of it remotely by zoom, or it becoming more global – and are you embracing that?? And are you learning about the latest new trends so you are the person they come to, or are you avoiding the trends and hoping they don’t reach you.? Because they will!

?

Onwards and upwards!

I don't know if I will remember the acronym but it definitely works. It needs a small plaque or poster to go with it.
