Until recently I didn’t fully appreciate the true value and meaning my network provided me. A collective group of colleagues, customers, suppliers, associations, industry leads, and subject matter experts built up over 17 years of collaborative working. That word ‘collaboration’ what does it actually mean? In my simple mind it’s sharing an interest in making something better and appreciating that an inclusive mindset and listening to others will get you there faster. Anyone who knows me will openly agree that I am not shy or quiet. But I also hope they would say I am a good listener. Seeking to understand and learn, taking opinions on board, having a trusted network to me comes from ‘shared moments’, affiliations with people that say ‘I understand you’, ‘I respect you’, ‘I value you’. Authentic interactions that support and develop and ultimately share commonality. This then results in Trust, one of the most important human needs we have, it strengthens connections and brings an open ability to share opinions and ideas with authenticity. Ultimately all of the above builds you a strong network.
Recently finding myself looking for a new role and considering my next steps in life, ‘what do I want to be when I grow up?’. I have been humbled by the power of my network and how valuable it is. The power to find support, help, advice and most importantly of enjoying some true engaging conversations and learning more through each person who has reached out. I have caught up with old colleagues, customers, people who I have interviewed with in the past, industry leaders and shared some very educational and interesting discussions. Discussions where I have learnt and absorbed information and created an even richer understanding of the world around me, changes and developments and hopefully have added something back. An opportunity I may not have harnessed if I hadn’t found myself in this situation.
Is it strange of me to say I feel lucky to find myself here? To have further reinforced my belief in the power of networking and the true ROI it gives not just for commercial transactions but for personal growth too. I think I am happy to be thought of as strange and want to thank each and every one of my network contacts old and new for contributing to my current position of purposefulness.
To give back, for those of you that want to enjoy the power of networking further, I have put together the following guide (with a little help from AI which I have also recently learned to navigate to develop my skills) enjoy and I hope it helps!
In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, the power of networking relationships cannot be underestimated. The ability to connect with others, build meaningful connections, and leverage those relationships can open doors to new opportunities, personal growth, and professional success. In this blog, we will explore the incredible benefits of networking and provide practical tips on how to build and nurture valuable relationships.
1.???? Expanding Your Network: Networking allows you to expand your circle beyond your immediate contacts. By attending industry events, conferences, or joining professional organizations, you can meet individuals from diverse backgrounds and industries. These connections can offer fresh perspectives, insights, and potential collaborations that can significantly enhance your personal and professional growth.
2.???? Access to Opportunities: Networking relationships can present opportunities that you may not have otherwise discovered. By connecting with individuals who are well-established in their fields, you gain access to their network of contacts, which can lead to job prospects, mentorship opportunities, or even potential partnerships. A strong network can be a powerful resource for career advancement and personal development.
3.???? Knowledge Sharing and Learning: Networking relationships foster a culture of knowledge sharing. Engaging with professionals in your field or related industries allows you to tap into their expertise and gain valuable insights. By actively participating in conversations, attending workshops, or joining online communities, you can broaden your knowledge base and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in your industry.
4.???? Emotional Support and Mentorship: Networking relationships go beyond the exchange of professional opportunities. They can provide valuable emotional support and mentorship. Developing connections with like-minded individuals who share similar goals and experiences can be a source of inspiration, motivation, and guidance. Mentors can offer advice, share their experiences, and provide insights that can help navigate the challenges and obstacles along your career path.
5.???? Building a Positive Reputation: Networking relationships allow you to create a positive reputation within your industry. By actively engaging with others and demonstrating your expertise, reliability, and willingness to help, you build a strong personal brand.
