Personal Missions for Professionals... What is Your WHY?
I have long been interested in the WHY of what people do. Why did they start down that path? Why did they choose that career? Why do people do what they do? It's very intriguing and this questioning has always been something I have thought about. However, it wasn't until I watched Simon Sinek's leadership video back in 2012 during a meeting with a client on creating their vision and mission (while I was doing HR work experience with a Consultant) that it made sense to start with why.
Since watching this video, starting with why keeps popping up in my workplaces particularly when change is happening. The reason 'why' is so much harder to think about is that it's more intangible and it is much easier to focus on what or how you do what you do. Like Simon says "people don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it". Even if there isn't a financial gain linked to the transaction people are still inspired and motivated by your why more than anything else.
I believe that if people are motivated, have the right resources and receive support; they are able to make a significant difference. I want to be able to help and support people to achieve this, to see problems resolved and work with people to reach common goals.
Have you thought about your why? Is starting with why something you see as challenging for yourself or clients?
