Personal lessons learned from coaching: Part 1

Personal lessons learned from coaching: Part 1

For a long time, I was quite hard on myself for my inability to keep a consistent fitness and healthy diet routine. I would work towards things based on 'feelings' I had but I found myself constantly disappointed even though I felt I worked hard. I was feeling very frustrated and was at the verge of giving up many times.

I had not realised then that the reason why I was feeling like that was because my goals were not rooted in an honest view of where I was in terms of health and fitness and more importantly, where I would like to get to realistically and what that would really look like.

In my coaching journey, I discovered a tool called the Scaling technique which helps by asking pertinent and pointed questions about where you see yourself currently in that thing you are wanting to improve and where you want to go and what you need to do to get there. I applied this to myself and I have found myself in a much more contented place when it comes to my fitness and health.

(By the way, apologies for looking extremely unfriendly in the picture below. I was busy trying to negotiate the concept of a selfie)

Instead of being stuck in an abstract cycle, I had a more realistic and practical view on where I am in terms of my health and fitness now and what I need to do to work towards where I want to be. It is no longer based on feelings I had which can change and shift depending on my mood but on more tangible and workable reference points.

So these days when I am overwhelmed by negative feelings about my health, weight and fitness, I go back to goals I've set for myself and where I am heading to with them. I would be kidding you if I said it was easy to do that. It is not, but at least now I have something solid and tangible to anchor on instead of just relying on how I feel on a given day.

If you find yourself in a situation where there are things you would like to improve about your life, whether it is in the area of work, a lifestyle you have, a relationship issue or maybe a skill you are looking to be better at but you seem to find it difficult to maintain momentum towards achieving these things like me before, then I believe I may have the solution for you.

I would like to help you by coaching you through these things. Just contact me by email at [email protected] and I would be happy to discuss how we can work towards that thing you would like to achieve.
