A Personal Journey Through Patient Falls: A Call for Enhanced Prevention Measures
Accidents can happen at any time, in any place, and my recent experience during a skiing weekend brought the harsh reality of patient falls into sharp focus. What began as a routine trip to the bathroom at night turned into a life-altering event, leaving me with a broken jaw, the loss of four teeth, and a newfound perspective on the importance of fall prevention in healthcare settings.

Chalet in St. Anton, Austria
In the middle of the night, fatigued and disoriented in an unfamiliar environment, I stumbled in the dark as I made my way to the bathroom. The fall was sudden, and the aftermath was surreal — covered in blood, spitting out teeth, and with a broken jaw. The subsequent journey through the emergency department, X-rays, and the revelation of a bruise brought mixed emotions — relief that surgery was not required, but the realization that the healing process would be extensive.
The jaw brace, which limited my jaw's movement, became a constant presence, leaving me unable to speak or eat. This unexpected outcome not only posed challenges with liquid food preparation and communication but also hindered my ability to exercise and participate in meetings, where my voice was required. Additionally, the financial strain of medical examinations and upcoming treatments added to the stress, highlighting the extensive repercussions of what initially appeared to be a minor fall.

Empathy for Elderly Patients
Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults aged 65 years and older. My own ordeal prompted reflections on the experiences of elderly patients and those with dementia, who face an elevated risk of falls. The potential for such incidents extends beyond the confines of home to hospitals, where unfamiliar surroundings heighten the danger. My grandmother's tragic fall, left undiscovered for hours, ultimately led to her passing 10 days later. This heartbreaking reality illustrates that, for many, a fall can mark the beginning of the end. Understanding the gravity of this statistic and witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of falls on vulnerable populations has deepened my commitment to advocating for comprehensive fall prevention measures in healthcare settings.

Call for Action to Empower Caregivers to Prevent Hospital Falls
My personal experience has fueled a deep motivation to contribute to the improvement of patient safety, particularly in preventing falls. As I navigate my own path to recovery, I now stand even more firmly behind our mission at QUMEA to "side with health professionals to proactively manage risks and improve outcomes. For everyone's peace of mind." Evaluations of our fall prevention solution indicate that, on average, we can prevent 63% of patient falls. Every prevented fall is a victory, and I am more convinced than ever about the significance of implementing such solutions in every hospital.

While my journey to recovery may be challenging, it has provided me with another perspective on the broader issue of patient falls. My hope is that by sharing my story and advocating for fall prevention solutions like QUMEAs, we can contribute to making hospitals safer spaces for everyone, reducing the physical, emotional, and financial toll that falls can exact on individuals and their families. Every prevented fall is a step towards a safer healthcare environment, and I am committed to making a difference in the lives of patients and their loved ones.
