Personal Growth-Your Word is Your Bond

On my website thegenovesecompany.com there are 10 tenets I live by. These are constantly reviewed for improvement. The latest addition was discussed in my last post on personal growth. Over the next several months I will further discuss each tenet.

Tenet #1: Your word is your bond. If you make a commitment always honor it.

While the concept is simple, so many people struggle to adhere to it.

Think about how many times you hear “I’ll call you”…and you don’t hear from them. Or, “We should get together…” with no real intent to do so. Isn’t it easier not to propose these actions? And one I hear all the time… “I’ll meet you at a specific time” and from history you know that person will be late. Friends and family may “cut you some slack”, but in business these can be dangerous habits with serious pitfalls.

In my mind honoring time commitments is a show of respect. If for some reason you can’t honor the commitment let the person know—and don’t let it become a consistent pattern.

When you propose an action and don’t follow through there will be some loss of respect and, more importantly, a loss of trust.

People appreciate and gravitate to dependability.

The values are a virtue that when they are taught by example, are learned, applied and never forgotten. Thanks, John for sharing your values!
