At the core, I am a scientist and a metastrategist and my mission is to use my best gifts, knowledge, energy, thinking, emotions, skills, expertise, experience and anything else ethical and legal to develop solutions and help others solve their problems, become their best possible selves, manifest their dreams and achieve their goals. Nothing is about me but for others. I am happiest developing cool solutions to save the planet and to help others achieve their goals, manifest their dreams, address their situations and become their best possible selves in areas of life that are important to them.
Now this is my sensitive area which I don't like talking about. I am only talking about it because it may help you and others and also to explain the context of my work and why I speak a lot about performance, brain, thinking emotions and strategy. I talk about some of these things because I have a distilled experience with some of them, especially the areas of mental and physical vitality, well-being and performance. My personal experiences in these are also involved in some of the solutions that I develop.
On the academic front, I was not a bad student at all right from the start. I did not attend kindergarten so my academic life starts at primary school level. Our school calendar had three terms, and although we wrote examinations at the end of every term; the third term examinations were considered the most important ones. My primary school had two streams per class, and I was the best student in my two streams at the end of my first year at school. When my name was called out during the announcement of the results at the assembly, I wanted to run away because I did not want to be paraded in front of the teachers and the whole school. Being the best student never really moved me and I saw all these announcements of the best students as a farce. It never really meant much to me. I actually believed that I was the best student because I had kissed my teacher at some point when she challenged the class if there was anyone who had the courage to come and kiss her. Ok you can talk about child abuse on here part, but for me it was a challenge and I raised my hand, walked over to her, kissed her and moved back to my chair. I don't remember where I kissed here for be honest, but I think it was on her chick but I am not longer sure. But the whole class burst into laughter and I was the talk of the class for a long time for having kissed a teacher!
As a young kid of that age, if we are very honest, school is not a big deal and I am not sure there is anyone who deliberately sets a goal of being the best student and puts much of the goal-driven conscious effort in studying that we tend to put as adults. For me then, school was school! You go to school, learn with others, leave school, forget the learning stuff and focus on playing and playing and playing. There was not any of this new phenomenon where parents have become teachers and children are fried in education stuff both at home and at school, not enough time to play.
There were no extra lessons to talk about and very little home work. Personally, I am not sure how I could have handled today's situation where parents and teachers seem to play an academic tennis ball match with kinds being the tennis ball. Look, being honest, society is taking this academic education too far and over commercialising human beings. Children need all the time they need to play. Adult life is tough. Enough of education but not too much. Give humans a break please!
So throughout my primary school I was always among the top ten students, but in the top five most of the time when it comes to examination rights. But there are peaks in my academic performance like in my fourth year of school where my performance shot through the roof and was the best student overall in the three grade four streams at Murehwa Central Primary School in Zimbabwe's Mashonaland East Province. I remember that in this year, at 10 years old, that is when I began to be very intentional about producing my best possible academic results-I mean to actually set an intention that you want to be the best student. But I cannot say it was goal setting the way we talk about goal setting in the self-help and motivation circles. I do not goal it goal setting because I never thought like;
"I want to be the best student. And here is exactly what I am going to do to achieve this goal. I am going to write down the goal. I am going to study for so many hours a day. This is what I am going to do to improve my learning and my memory. This is the kind of lifestyle I am going to adopt."
It was none of that. I just the intention that I wanted to be the best and I kept intention in my mind and reminded myself as often as I could about it. So it was an intention without any meaningful strategy. The only thing I did was praying to be the best student. As much as often, I would pass through the church and pray and especially pray that I be the best student. I don't know if that could be called a strategy although I believe in God and in the need to pray for our intentions.
Fast forward, when the final examinations came I produced the best Grade Four results in the school that year and angered a few guys who thought they deserved to be the best ahead of me.
I also had academic performance peaks in my Ordinary Level Cambridge Examinations where I produced the best results in my school, getting ahead of other 90 students. The results earned me a Rio Tinto Advanced Level Bursary that paid for my Advanced Level Studies at Goromonzi High School when it was one of the best schools in academics in the country.
I also produced top results that included to As at Goromonzi High School, getting a Zimbabwe Government Merit Award for producing one of the best results in Cambridge Advanced Level Biology in the country. The results meant the government paid for part of my university education fees.
After a bad patch during my first year at university, I completed my first degree but I was not happy with my academic performance and the results. This does not mean that my first degree results were very bad, but they fell short of my personal performance standards or the standards that I had been used to.
When I went for my Master's Degree studies and Lancaster University, I took it as a personal self-redemption. I told myself it was time to restore myself academically and the only way to do this was by producing a distinction. This kind of target, I knew was somewhat too ambitious because STEM education can be difficult. Fortunately, after a false start, I achieved the goal and probably had my very best academic moments of my life.
I am sure this whole story is not just about academic performance but actually mental performance. Africa university education I got deeply interested in human performance and started learning about it until I took a course in neurolinguistic programming nlp me. NLP and is subject about human achievement and human performance and in my view provides the tools and strategies for turning emotional intelligence theory into practical action and practical results. Berean Resultsology, my new discipline actually is based on NLP, psychology, scientific modelling and the other disciplines like neurobiology and brain science.
On the physical performance side, long-distance running and physical exercise is part of my lifestyle. I have run some very long distances like the 90 kilometre Comrades UltraMarathon Twice and the Two Oceans 56 kilometres ultramarathon twice as well and completed all the four within the stipulated time. These are not just challenges, but they have also helped me have personal experiences in physical performance.
My studies and solutions in mental and physical performance, goal achievement and human achievement, learning and brain performance and management, are not just based on theory, but also on my personal experiences. Some of the skills and strategies that I share about success, happiness, achievement, performance and results achievement are ones that I have used in my academic and running life.
