Personal Development is DEAD.
Things are getting serious. And urgent.
Or, more precisely, seriously urgent.
Personal Development, as we knew it just a few years ago, is dead.
And rightfully so, as it was mostly based on external motivation, validation, and toxic resilience, often leading to burnouts and a false sense of improvement.
Unsustainable, short-term gains. High highs and low lows.
Current extraordinary leaders, whether globally or in your local community, talk about a holistic approach to Personal Development.
And MOST IMPORTANTLY – personal development that is intrinsically led.
My passion lies in demystifying Imposter Syndrome as part of being a Conscious Leader.
There is nothing mysterious about Imposter Syndrome when approached from a #holistic perspective.
So, what are the principles of modern Personal Development?
SELF-AWARENESS
The ability to recognise your own:
SELF-AWARENESS IS NOT ENOUGH – we MUST take action.
It's one thing to see things; it's a completely different thing to change our behaviour and break the old pattern because our mind will want to keep us in the old, familiar ways of doing things.
WHY? Because it’s familiar. Anything new is scary.
It takes clear focus and time to change. Not many people are willing to do that. They say they are, but they are not. Are you?
EMOTIONAL MASTERY – for the love of GOD – please pay attention to your emotions.
Unprocessed emotions cause stress, and stress causes 80% of physical illnesses, including cancer, tumors, autoimmune disease, etc. I am not making this up; this is based on the latest medical reports.
Denying or dwelling on our emotions, not expressing them, or turning them into a ruminating monster is literally killing us.
If that’s not a good enough reason for paying attention to our emotions, I am not sure what is.
YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND RUNS YOUR SHOW
Please give up the idea that you are in control of your own doing. Because you’re not.
Your subconscious mind is, making you think it is YOU who is calling the shots. Learning how to observe, recognise, and question your patterns gives you a fighting chance to start making real conscious decisions.
Again – the question is – do you really want to? It takes effort.
HEART – BRAIN COHERENCE
Our heart and gut are as powerful when it comes to making decisions as our mind (more powerful, actually, but let’s just start with being equal).
Our brain contains 40,000 neurons. Our heart contains the same amount of neurons – meaning the heart has its own nervous system.
Coherence is a unity between our brain, heart, and body – the most powerful state to perform in.
Extraordinary leaders understand that they deliver their best work when simultaneously using their mind, heart, and spirit.

INTUITION is a superpower
We all love a great action plan, don’t we? I am the first one to put my hand up.
But have you ever tried to ditch the action plan and listen to your gut feeling?
If not, well – it might just be the time to do that because intuition is no longer some kind of woo-woo story. Science today can clearly record the energy of intuition in our field and the impact it has when it comes to the results we create when using our intuition.
WHY? Because when we use our intuition – the decision we make is made in alignment with our internal belief system as opposed to our logical “should” reasoning, which adapts to external needs – not our own internal ones.
SELF-LOVE – oh dear, that scary phrase so many of us don’t know what to do with.
Self-love is not going for a massage or taking a warm bath. That’s self-care.
Self-love means I know I am worthy, I deserve, I have my own back – no matter what.
Self-love is being my own internal supportive coach, not my worst critic.
How can other people love us if we don’t love ourselves??? Impossible.
Extraordinary leaders will not self-sabotage and waste their time beating themselves up. Why would they? What would be the purpose?
Instead, when they fail at something, they take it as a learning experience, get up, dust themselves off, and support themselves in trying again. And they support themselves again. And they support themselves again.
SOLITUDE
Is a regular practice of extraordinary leaders.
Quieting the never-ending stream of thoughts, understanding that we are NOT our thoughts, and tuning into the silence of our own essence creates space to be creative, attuned to new ideas and innovations. A regular practice of solitude helps us to slide into the states of flow in which we are the most productive.
As you can see, today’s personal development is far from pushing and forcing.
It is about being able to go with the flow, tuning into our energy, and listening to our uniqueness.
A copycat belief that I should be like someone else to be successful is the fastest killer of achieving great results.
In today’s pandemic of mental health challenges, the only way OUT is to go IN.
With compassion and genuine curiosity about who we are. Not who we think we should be.
What’s your 2024 personal development intention?
If having a Coach is part of that 2024 intention, get in touch, book a conversation using the link below, and let’s talk.
As always, my friends,
With lots of LOVE.

1 年What a fantastic article, Michaela Smith! I’ve known that feeling of ignoring emotions in the past - not always by my choice - and it often comes with something in my mind that feels like the equivalent of slamming my fingers in a door. That ability to stop, sense, acknowledge and to work through those moments is perfectly healthy.
