Be the person you want to be.
Fellow humans (and maybe a couple unicorns and cats),
I have one bit of advice: ALWAYS fake it till you make it! That was just a joke. The idea of faking it until I make it has all sorts of wrong baked into it. For anyone who remotely knows me, authenticity is my number one value in life. It's the last thing I'm willing to sacrifice, so fake it till you make it doesn't exactly work for me.
Fake It Till You Make It
Let's be real. Pretending to be someone you're not can be downright exhausting. It can feel overwhelming, inauthentic, and instill the negative habit of constant comparison.
Here's the thing. There's a better way to unlock your inner potential and become the version of yourself you want to be. And it all starts with the art of genuine acting.
Act It Until You Become It
Act in accordance to the traits and actions of the person you want to be. To embody the traits and actions you want to possess, you've got to step into the shoes of your ideal self. Who do you look up to? Who inspires you?
Take a moment to think about what qualities they possess that you want to emulate. How would they handle challenging situations? What decisions would they make? By stepping into their shoes and acting as if you already possess those qualities, you can become the best version of yourself.
Every action you take is a vote for the person you wish to become. – James Clear
Practice Makes Progress
Becoming the version of yourself you want to be takes humility, time, practice, and patience. You may need to experiment with new behaviors, try out different approaches, or ask for feedback from others.
The key is to commit to the process and keep practicing every day. Remember, progress, not perfection, is the goal here.
Be the Protagonist of Your Story
At the end of the day–and certainly at the end of our lives–we find out that we are the authors of our own lives. If you want to become a certain version of yourself, you've got to act accordingly. By embodying the traits and actions of the person you want to be you can become the protagonist of your story and create the life you hope to achieve.
As author of Atomic Habits , James Clear says:
"Becoming the type of person you want to become — someone who lives by a stronger standard, someone who believes in themselves, someone who can be counted on by the people that matter to them — is about the daily process you follow and not the ultimate product you achieve."
If you want to make a change, it's time to step into the shoes of your ideal self and start acting as if you already possess those qualities. Practice every day, be patient with yourself, and watch as you transform into the person you've always wanted to be. I believe in you.
