Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms
Following a concussion, many people experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, irritability, insomnia, loss of concentration and memory, blurry vision, as well as sensitivity to light and noise. In most cases, these symptoms disappear after a few days to weeks following the initial injury. Sometimes, however, these symptoms can last beyond the expected recovery times. In these cases, the symptoms are referred to as persistent post-concussive symptoms, and the associated condition is known as the post-concussion syndrome.
A recent research revealed that one in four children who had suffered a concussion experienced chronic post-concussion symptoms for years afterwards. These children were mistakenly thought to have conditions such as attention deficit disorders, migraine, sleep disorders or depression, and received unnecessary treatments which they did not benefit from.
Proper diagnosis is the first and most important step for providing appropriate treatment for concussions. Following the initial treatment, long-term monitoring becomes critical to identify patients who might be suffering from persistent post-concussive symptoms.
Medicortex is developing an easy-to-use diagnostic kit for the detection of concussions. For more information please visit our website at www.medicortex.fi.
