Persistence trumps talent
"Persistence trumps talent" - Daniel Pink
Every now and then we have days where we feel like our effort to reward ratio is skewed. We have gotten so used to seeing instant validation on social media that if we don't see that in other areas of our life, we naturally feel dejected.
We are also living in a world today where we have glorified the idea of being born “gifted”. When we look at some of the greatest athletes of our times - Serena Williams, Michael Jordon, Sachin Tendulkar (the list is long!), we are quick to jump to a conclusion that says they were born with enormous amounts of talent, born to be successful. It is absolutely true that they are undoubtedly very gifted but the truth is - there are millions of people who are talented!! What we sometimes don't acknowledge is the years and years of effort they have put in, every single day, to get to where they are. How many of us have given up consistently working out after 3-6 months because we don't see results? The results visibly start to show only after 12-18 months but it's the work you put in everyday for those months that’s got you there.
Talent means nothing if you don't consistently hone it. This is important to remember because there will be days (or years) where you feel like your efforts are not translating to success. The reality is that every single step you take everyday towards honing your skills is leading upto the success you will have.
So if you are having a tough day today, remember the power of perseverance.
