Persistence and Success

I recently retired from a company that I helped co-found, after 20 years of research and a drug approval by FDA and EMA. This same drug was a 2022 Prix Galien USA Nominees for Best Pharmaceutical Agent. For context, the Prix Galien is regarded as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in biopharmaceutical research.

But what does 20 years of R&D success really look like?

It’s 20 years of lab notebooks and planners (thanks Michael Hyatt ), re-reading your notes about trial failures and trial successes to glean new ideas, it is celebrating landmark events (like raising money on the public markets), noting drug approvals, seeing a concept come to life in HealthCare Provider materials. It’s working for no pay, taking out loans to put into the company and having your wife work fulltime to put food on the table. It’s being the company janitor and scrubbing toilets, travelling the globe constantly to talk to investigators, or to the FDA, or the EMA or to investors.

But it is really about believing in a drug and being persistent. Never giving up…ever. Whether flying to a location or getting rides to the office from colleagues when you can’t afford gas, it means being persistent. When the data seems strange and you need to look for the inconsistency to set it straight, it means being persistent. It means showing up to an almost empty office to work for 18 months without salary because showing up is persistence. And most importantly, it means being persistent while lifting up those you work with so that they can persist.

per·sist·ent: 1. continuing firmly or obstinately in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. 2. continuing to exist or endure over a prolonged period.

We need to celebrate all the wins along the way because they encourage us. But we also need to celebrate persistence—and encourage those who are persisting despite opposition. I’ve had a great career so far and worked with an amazing team, and I look forward to new adventures with Reformation Consulting Services Inc. .

Rob, your efforts made a world of differences for so many patients. I hope to hear more in this new venture

Rob, you are too young to retire! The persistence during the drug development in question is admirable. I enjoyed watching some of the progress and hoped a small contribution helped. I can recommend retirement ?? Phillip

Thank you for not giving up, Rob. Many LN patients in Florida and elsewhere are now accessing life-changing treatment because YOU… DIDN’T… GIVE… UP! Wish you all the best in the days ahead.
