Have you ever wanted to succeed at something, yet you didn’t get the result you wanted?

A sport? A hobby? A business if you’re an entrepreneur? A project at work? Maybe a test in school?

And when you didn’t initially get the desired results, did you give up?

Our Brains are Working Against Us

The human brain is somehow engineered to magnify and hold onto negatives. In particular, negatives that we perceive as threats.

The threat doesn’t have to be rational, literal or obvious. Threats to our self-esteem; our self-efficacy; self-confidence; our meaning of self and life are equal to physical threats to our irrational, subconscious brain. Threats like these are, to our old brain, no less ominous and absolute than an actual threat to our physical lives.

Our old brain, where our heart, lungs and other organs, are monitored and managed—and where fear, fight and flight are perceived and managed—doesn’t rationalize. It is literal. It seeks, recognizes and reacts. To our old brains, these modern threats to our sense of personal identity safety are as real, dangerous and immediate threats to our biological life.

Our Childhood Brains Got It. Our Adult Brains Don’t. Persistence-Success Connection.

If God and nature blessed you with four whole, healthy and functioning limbs, let me ask you…

When you began trying to walk, did you do it the first time out?

Is it possible that you fell the first few hundred times you tried?

Is it possible that you kept falling, hard and often, even once you learned how to walk?

If this is true, and I know it is, why didn’t you give up on walking? You were clearly a failure at it?
