Well now, at a workshop the other week, a fellow said to me, ' Affirmations are for the hard of thinking.'
'They're for half-wits', he proclaimed.
'They're just Americanised Psychobabble', he declared.
#courageous
He had read somewhere that the renowned Sales Trainer Tom Hopkins had recommended a self-talk system. Because Tom Hopkins is American, he assumed that the idea of Self-talk originated in America.
Self-talk is one of the most powerful aspects of Human Existence. We all do it, all the time. We talk ourselves in and out of situations, ideas, opportunities and?
dangers every day of the week.
And we still doubt its existence. Which point indicates how observant we are as intelligent, thoughtful beings.
#positive#determined
Self-talk is articulating our beliefs. 'I'll never be able'.
'There's no point in trying that'.
'He'll never believe my story'.
'That'll never work'.
We see it and hear it in others, especially our children, and we tell them not to be talking such nonsense.
Then we go off and do the very same thing ourselves, and to ourselves.
#Faith
One way to re-evaluate the use of self-talk is to look at quotations that impress us.
Nelson Mandela rode the fiery steed of Despair and Hardship with the words of W.E Henley:

'In the dark of night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever Gods that be,
For my unconquerable soul.'
#health#mindset
These were the words of Mandela's mantra, day in, day out, in his 27 years of incarceration. They not only helped his sanity. They formed an attitude of forgiveness and warmth for the miscreants who maltreated him so savagely.
That's self-talk. That's what it can do. We can shape our lives and the well-being and happiness of those near and dear to us too by judicious use of this practice.
#Belief
Self-talk is a statement to ourselves of what we believe. That's all it is. The more we use it for a belief, the more we reinforce that belief. And that's one of the reasons why we find it hard to change a belief or see the point of another. The point of view we now hold has been firmly embedded in our incessant repetition.?
#repetition
However, awareness of this can open doors to new perceptions, unfamiliar pathways, and different opportunities that may exist right under our noses.
But our eyes, blinkered by narrow horizons, and our minds, guided by one-track re-iteration, can cut us off from the vast sea of possibilities stretching to limitless horizons.?
#Persist
For this to become a reality, we may need first to listen to ourselves, to hear what we're telling ourselves, and to examine those fundamental Beliefs that run our lives.?
#success
And that's not too strong a statement. I'll explain in the next post.
#perseverance
