Persevering in the Face of Hardship

My name is Sahra and my family and I were among those who were relocated from our home in Hargeisa and made the journey to Qalaax IDP (internally displaces people) community in June of 2021. Once upon a time, we were self-reliant, but circumstances shifted.

Living in the camp is a testament to human resilience. We see countless individuals grappling with their circumstances, neighbors helping neighbors, but the needs are critical. Compared to others, I consider myself fortunate.

The community spirit here is remarkable, and despite the challenges, there is a sense of solidarity and hope that binds us all together.

I often reflect on how far we have come since our arrival. The small shop I opened has become a hub for the local community, where people gather, share stories, and support each other. It has given me a sense of purpose and a way to contribute to our community's growth.

Every day presents its own set of challenges, but we face them with courage and determination. The children in the camp, full of dreams and aspirations, remind me of the importance of self-empowerment. I am hopeful that with continued support, we can provide them with opportunities to learn and flourish.

When we arrived here, SOS Children's Villages were among the first to extend their hands to us. They offered sustenance, financial aid, and even constructed latrines for our use.

Through the Humanitarian Action program of SOS Children's Villages, we were first provided with food aid, followed by the construction of latrines. The initial financial aid they offered paved the way for us to settle and reclaim our independence in this new area. With the following aid, I was able to establish a small shop selling essential goods and items that same year.

I have food for today, I can provide for my family, and for that, I am eternally grateful. SOS Children's Villages in Somaliland's unwavering support has not only helped us survive but has allowed us to start rebuilding our lives with dignity.

Looking to the future, I am inspired by the resilience and strength of those around me. Together, we are building a foundation for better days ahead, driven by the belief that even in the face of adversity, we can persevere and thrive.
