Permissionless Support

I was reading an insanely great newsletter article by Justin Welsh this morning. In this post, Justin was talking about "permissionless support". Here is what Justin wrote:

Permissionless support: Permissionless support is when you support someone without asking their permission. It’s extremely powerful. (Source)

I think the idea of permissionless support is a powerful idea for up-and-coming professionals who want to have a network full of talented mentors.

Here are 3 steps to build your network organically using permissionless support:

Step 1 - Find someone you admire. This part is easy; while you're browsing LinkedIn or Twitter, I'm sure you have come across accomplished people who you would like to emulate. Ali Abdaal and Lex Fridman are some of my heroes.

Step 2 - Ingest their content. Read up on your hero's content. Listen to their podcast, comment on their LinkedIn posts, subscribe (and read!) their newsletter.

Step 3 - Permissionless support (huzzah!). While browsing your hero's content, you are sure to find an idea that resonates with you. Use your skillset to create new value from that idea.

  • Justin Welsh gave the example of creating a visual that supports your hero's written work, but this is just one of many ways to provide permissionless support.
  • You could also make a summary of a book or podcast episode that your hero made.
  • The key is to put the effort in, and show how much you value your hero's content by creating something meaningful.
