THE PERKS OF DISCIPLINE

THE PERKS OF DISCIPLINE

It is often believed and stated, that discipline has a direct correlation with Confidence. The more disciplined you are, the more confidence radiates from within. Disciplined people find it easier to stick to their commitment and are not often caught by surprise even if results don’t show. This is simply because they are true to their discipline, and therefore they are confident even if things don’t translate into immediate results, being disciplined is fulfilling enough

Think of all the great players that you may have observed in your favorite matches, their ability to be a strong batsman or a bowler, comes from dedicated practice and the discipline to stick to it. Even great actors follow this philosophy, as being a good actor is like an ageing wine, the longer they have been at it, the stronger their art.

So, what does all this have to do with ‘being confident’ you ask? The habit of being disciplined creates a self-assurance mechanism, encouraging us to tap into our internal resources of willpower and self-beliefs, therefore creating a process of self-reliance leading to higher confidence levels.

?This explains when children at a young age are taught to do homework on their own or fix their breakfast, and grow up to be more independent.

Discipline also creates a mechanism of ‘repetition’, the habit of repeating routine or bettering routine strengthens our belief in relying on our internal resources. Gymgoers stick to their routine of building a healthy body, great speakers have the habit of engaging in speaking events, and basketballers have the habit of shooting into the basket. It’s a second nature, therefore strengthening confidence.

? Discipline is a part of building your confidence levels. It is a practice that is always at play, with or without anyone noticing. It is a habit formed unconsciously that runs on its own and drives your potential. Yet we find it so hard to stay disciplined.

However, the reason we do not feel strongly about discipline is because of the brain's habit of making us want to stay comfortable. This is a wiring all of us suffer from or enjoy

This is why we are resistant to change, resistant to new horizons, exploring new ventures, or simply raising new bars. Anything that feels uncomfortable to the mind, body, and existing emotional state would draw resistance. This explains why hitting the gym every day is hard for many or staying true to the change is hard. This explains why trying out something new may make us seem less confident about it initially.

Unfortunately so, staying comfortable or taking the course of being comfortable in staying less disciplined also diminishes our ability to stay confident and composed.

So, what are the perks of staying disciplined at workplaces or in life in general

It builds confidence and retains it too- When things go awry, discipline puts us back on track. It helps us stay resilient and count on our abilities first, bringing down our dependency on others. Think of how children are told to finish homework after school and grow up believing in being accountable.

It builds character- Staying disciplined builds character- Knowing what isn’t good for ourselves, learning to say yes to what truly matters, and filtering out the odds helps in growth. Some people are naturally more resilient and tolerant, it emerges from staying disciplined.

Helps us predict – Predictability in not determining the action of others, but building EQ to see how we react to certain situations. Knowing our triggers helps us navigate better through tough times.

So, if you have seen your confidence level dipping recently, do check if there is missing discipline, chances are that’s the only place you need to work on.
