Periods should not stop Education: spotlight on Menstrual poverty in Ghana.

Dear Talk to your Midwife community,

As we step into the new year, our commitment to shedding light on pressing issues remains steadfast. In our first newsletter for 2024, we turn our focus to an often overlooked challenge that affects the lives of countless girls worldwide- Menstrual poverty.

In many corners of the globe, including Ghana, a significant number of young girls face the daunting hurdle of menstrual poverty. This term encapsulates the barriers these girls encounter due to lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, proper sanitation facilities and crucial education on reproductive health.

Menstrual poverty goes beyond the tangible challenges of acquiring sanitary products; it permeates into education, health and personal dignity. Girls who lack access to proper menstrual hygiene management often miss school days, limiting their educational opportunities. Moreover, the absence of essential resources jeopardizes their health and compromises their sense of dignity and well-being.

INTRODUCING OUR PROJECT (FLOW CLEAN PROJECT)

Our community support and contribution to help in eradicating menstrual poverty is the Flow Clean Initiative. This project is not merely about providing pads; its a holistic approach to empower rural girls. For 5 years in operation, over 5,000 girls have been provided with disposable pads and 5 community schools have received a borehole each. All these done through the benevolence of our partners. Moving forward, our goal is to reach a lot more rural girls with the aim of sustainability. Thus, introducing reusable sanitary products which are Eco friendly as well. By training them on making their own reusable pads and supplying essential WASH systems, these girls are equipped with tools for sustainable menstrual hygiene management. It is about sustainability, empowerment and breaking the silence around menstrual health.

STAY TUNED FOR MARCH: Empowering through action

In March, we are excited to announce a hands-on project that takes our commitment to empowering girls a step further. The team will be organizing a training program where girls will learn the art of making reusable pads, receive comprehensive SRH education, coupled with the provision of essential hygiene kits.

Location: Eastern Region, Ghana

Target: 100 girls
