Perhaps I Should Not Have Said That

Think back to a time in which you were deeply upset about something…were you triggered by:
- A row with your partner?
- A critical message or email?
- A specific situation or circumstance?
Do you remember the time it took you to go from peak distress back to calm and centred? The length of time it takes you to make that journey determines your capacity for resilience.
This does not mean that we should suppress how we feel at any point or under any circumstances.?If something upsets us, we should label how we are feeling (e.g. angered, distraught, devastated, etc.) and let the emotion burn itself to completion by observing the physical sensations in the body.
During the period of peak emotional intensity, we should refrain from doing what most of us have been guilty of (myself included!) which only makes the situation worse: responding when upset.
A powerful technique that is quite useful to decompress in moments of emotional intensity is practicing conscious breathing. Just 1 or 2 minutes of deep inhaling and exhaling whilst holding the breath for a few seconds after each inhale and exhale is a tried-and-tested technique that can help you reach the desired state of calm sooner.
In a state of emotional equanimity, your consciousness expands and you will have more options available to you when it's time to respond. So, rather than reacting and becoming defensive or even aggressive, you might respond with empathy or even compassion.
In upcoming newsletters, I’ll share other techniques you can practice to increase your capacity for resilience, which will have a significant impact on your relationships at work and at home.

8 个月César's reflections on managing emotions are so relatable and practical. He really gets how our reaction times when we're upset can shape our resilience. Instead of bottling up our feelings, he encourages us to understand and express them. His advice on conscious breathing to calm down before reacting is such a game-changer. It helps us stay cool and choose empathy and compassion over defensiveness. I’m excited about the additional techniques he plans to share they’re bound to help us improve our relationships at work and home. Cesar's advice is a great reminder of the power of mindful reflection and thoughtful responses.
