Performative vs. Transformative Allyship: Which Are You?

Performative vs. Transformative Allyship: Which Are You?

Allyship is about actively supporting and advocating for a marginalized group that you are not a part of. It goes beyond simply being non-prejudiced and requires a commitment to understanding your own privilege and how it impacts others.

Allyship is more than just words. It's about action, and there are two main types: performative and transformative.

A. Performative allyship is when people show support for a marginalized group without taking meaningful action to create real change. It's often done for social recognition or to avoid criticism. It is often associated with flaky leadership, pink washing and tokenism.

B. Transformative allyship is when people actively work to dismantle systems of oppression and create a more equitable society. It's about using your privilege to amplify marginalized voices, challenge discriminatory behavior, and advocate for policy change. It is a proactive, consistent and lifelong practice of unlearning and relearning in which a person in a position of privilege and power seeks to operate in solidarity with a marginalized group.

Here are some key differences:

* Motivation: Performative allies are motivated by self-interest, while transformative allies are motivated by a genuine desire for justice.

* Action: Performative allies make symbolic gestures, while transformative allies take concrete action.

* Impact: Performative allyship can actually be harmful, as it can give the illusion of progress without creating real change. Transformative allyship creates meaningful change and empowers marginalized communities.

Which kind of ally are you?

If you're serious about being an ally, it's important to be honest with yourself about your motivations and actions. Are you willing to do the hard work of challenging your own biases and taking action to create a more just world?

Remember allyship is an ongoing journey, not a destination. It's important to continually reflect on your own actions and strive to be the best ally you can be.
