What is classed as a performance textile
Performance fabrics are fabrics engineered for a variety of uses where the fabric is designed to perform across a wide range of conditions. Performance fabrics are used to manufacturer clothing aimed at sports and fitness applications, ie active wear, sports wear, endurance wear, ski wear, etc
Performance fabrics are designed for providing extra comfort and protection, whilst with standing the elements and climates the wearer is faced with.
With the increase in popularity in performance wear worn for both sports and fashion there are a number of companies which make specific performance fabrics which are designed to aid in breath-ability and wicking.
As an example a football shirt is made of performance fabrics which allow the player to wear the shirt for longer periods without it becoming un-comfy.

Moisture Management
Moisture management is one of the key performance criteria in today's apparel industry. It is defined as the ability of a garment to transport moisture away from the skin to the garment's outer surface.
Water Proof / Water Resistance
Waterproof is the process of making an object or structure waterproof or water-resistant, so that it remains relatively unaffected by water or resisting the ingress of water under specified conditions. Such items may be used in wet environments or under water to specified depths.
Water Vapour Permeability / Breathability
Water vapour permeability is a measure of the passage of water vapour through the material. It is also known as water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) or moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR). It is the mass of water vapour transmitted through a unit area in a unit time under specified conditions of temperature and humidity.
Thermal Resistance
Thermal resistance is a heat property and a measurement of a temperature difference by which an object or material resists a heat flow. Thermal resistance is the reciprocal of thermal conductance.
Ultraviolet Protection
Ultraviolet protective clothing is clothing specifically designed for sun protection and is produced from a fabric rated for its level of ultraviolet (UV) protection.
Air Permeability / Wind Proof / Wind Resistance
The rate of air flow passing perpendicularly through a known area of fabric is adjusted to obtain a prescribed air pressure differential between the two fabric surfaces. From this rate of air flow, the air permeability of the fabric is determined.
Anti-bacterial
This test method provides a quantitative/qualitative procedure for the comparison and evaluation of the degree of antibacterial activity on the fabric.
