Performance pay will not help education. Here’s why
The use of external rewards to motivate people is nothing new. It is being used in big business across the globe, but business and education are very different domains. And over time, the use of external rewards has not always led to the intended outcomes. Indeed, it might be suggested that the provision of external rewards increases the likelihood of unscrupulous behaviour and demotivation. Performance pay is not the answer.
......Performance pay is a simplistic response to a complex challenge that is facing education. Performance pay is not a sustainable solution for maintaining teaching motivation....

2 年An interesting take Michael. I agree with you that ‘performance’ pay is a slippery notion and vulnerable to manipulative practices. I am wondering if you are open to a pay scale that is not merely based on years of experience, and instead offers incentives to those with more qualifications or demonstrated expertise/specialisation?
