Performance Management System: Part-4

So far, I could have discussed ‘metric’ means measurable expression and any metric that reflect performance is called KPI. I have also discussed that KPIs are developed from Objectives. Objective means what I want, how much I want, when I want and lastly who want it. Let us develop more objective so that we understand Objectives & KPIs well.

Example-1: I am suffering from high blood pressure. Doctor advised me to monitor blood pressure for a period of two weeks along with 03 kilometer walking and report. In such scenario, we can develop two objectives.

a.   Monitor blood pressure for two weeks

b.   Walk 03 kilometer to reduce BP

First: Monitor blood pressure for two weeks

Precise Objective     : Monitor blood pressure

KPI                       : # mmHg blood pressure

Target                   : (As it is to be monitored, I need to know by checking)

Timeline                 : Everyday, 2 weeks

KPI Owner              : Me

(Please check blood pressure (BP) is a measurable expression, so it is metric and it can be increased/decreased, so it reflects my performance as such “Blood Pressure” is a KPI for me) Note: mmHg (millimeter of mercury, unit of Blood Pressure).

Second: Walk 03 kilometer to reduce BP

Precise Objective     : Walk 03 kilometer

KPI                       : # Kilometer walked

Target                   : 03

Timeline                 : 2 weeks

KPI Owner              : Me

(Please check kilometer walked is a measurable expression, so it is a metric and it can be increased/decreased through walking, so it reflects my performance as such “# Kilometer walked” is a KPI for me) Note: Kilometer (Kilometer is a unit of distance).

Example-2: I am suffering from high blood sugar. Doctor advised me to monitor blood sugar for a period of two weeks.

Objective: Monitor blood sugar for a period of two weeks.

Precise objective     : Monitor blood sugar

KPI                       : # Blood sugar (glucose)

Target                   : (As it is to be monitored, I need to know by checking)

Timeline                 : 2 weeks

KPI Owner              : Me

Example: Select an objective for your child who will sit for SSC exam 2019 and you want her to get CGPA-5.

Objective: Ensure CGPA-5 in SSC exam by 2019.

Precise Objective     : Ensure CGPA-5

KPI                       : # CGPA

Target                   : 5

Timeline                 : 2019

KPI Owner              : Child

It is to be noted that objective starts with “Verb”. Very simple and individualistic objectives have been developed. So that anyone can set objective for him and reach personal goal? Now what is “Objective”? What is “Strategic Objective”? What is “Goal”? What benefits it will bring for all of us as organization, manager, team and employee or an individual or as student?
