PERFORMANCE: How Completing Your Day Improves Your Performance?

One of the largest impediments to Performance is how you complete your day. You see a lot of articles on how to start your day or how to create a high performance day. What about completing your day? This often gets overlooked. If your a high performer you are smoked by the end of they day. Because you are a high performer you keep going. You know the right right decision is to stop taking action and prepare to go to bed. However you are addicted to taking more action.  Since you don't transition to a restful sleep this will affect your next day's performance. You don't realize how much this is affecting your performance. What's stopping you? You don' t realize what's at stake. You overlook the power that comes from resetting your mind and creating a clear, restful mind for the next day which comes from a restful night.

So what's going on here? As humans we are great at starting strong whether it’s our day, a new project or an athletic event. When we start something new we are excited about exploding out of the figurative gates with vigor and power.  Do we finish strong? No. We end up losing focus, getting burned out or losing our desire to keep performing. Do the best performers finish strong? Yes. They know the importance of warming down, running through the finish line or mentally completing their tasks. Why? Because they know it resets their minds and sets them up for phenomenal performances in the future. How? When you mentally or physically complete something it creates a clearing for new creation and action items to come into the completed space. If you don’t complete something you will carry the old items fully of worry and stress into the next space. It will clutter the space. For example, you go to sleep worrying about the next 10 action items for the next day. Now your sleep is affected and those worries about the in-completion of those action items are cluttering your mind. You don’t sleep well. You wake up in the middle of the night thinking about the actions on your list. The great performers know your day is for business and your night is for rest. They separate the two and it boosts their performance big time. We don't realize we are not transitioning to rest and instead keeping the business switch on at all times. This lack of sleep, which studies have proven impacts motor skills more than being drunk, affects your next day drastically. This lack of sleep will stack until you burn out like the wheels on a hot rod. So simply not competing the prior day can have huge effects on the next days performance through lack of sleep and a cluttered, worried mind.

So what are some action items you can take? Choose a time in the evening where you will mentally and physically complete the day. During this time stop acting on your task list then schedule your action items for the next day. Once your next day is scheduled turn off your electronic devices, organize your clothes and gear for the next day, clean your place especially your kitchen and finally relax and think about what you accomplished that day. As you do this each evening add to the list what’s effective and take away what’s ineffective. This is your time in the evening to complete your day. If your actions items are not complete, be complete with the fact that you will finish those action items tomorrow. Don't carry worry or stress with you to bed. This is your time to complete, relax, and reflect.

How does this setup your next day for performance? It creates a clean slate for you to start your next day. Think about opening a sketch book and looking for a clean page white page. This white page is similar to how your mind will be; clear. The goal is to start your next day with a clear and uncluttered mind. This will set you up for a powerful performance.
