The Reserve Bank of India's Digital Payment Index (DPI) increased to 349 in March 2022, up 15% from 304 in September 2021, demonstrating a rise in India's adoption of digital payments.

The adoption of digital payments has been more rapid, primarily driven by the unique, real-time, homegrown, mobile-enabled system – UPI. The UPI system was introduced in 2016.
