Performance & Achievement... A Thing of the Past

Performance & Achievement... A Thing of the Past

There is no winning, there is only movement.

It’s so ingrained in us that we must prove our value. And in the old world that meant throughput, being a good team member, and conforming to the corporate culture. In return the company would provide a stable work environment and clear goals and crisp directions to get there.

But, our world is constantly being reshaped and influenced. Even the tools we use change from day to day. And in between, amidst muti-dimensional radical change, amidst accelerating speed of that change, stand the people who are meant to deliver.

Great strain is being felt (and finally recognized) at every level of organizations. A strain that surfaces the worst and best in human behavior – a strain that wears away at the fabric of what it has meant to be a professional. A strain that is unsustainable.

I remember a time when you could go to work, accomplish something, and go home. A simpler time, when good work was recognizable, bad behavior was dealt with swiftly, and you had a sense of place and purpose in a natural order – and there was rest at the end of the day.

That world has long passed, and in its place are long hours unaccounted for trying to make sense out of what is presented to us in the course of a day.

The difficulty is, that people still want a sense of accomplishment, they still need some confirmation that they have done their part in their relationship with their employer. People want to care about their work. And that is hard to do when efforting produces little visible result.

I’m writing this today to let you know that in my research and experience with business transformation, movement is the key. Movement, at all costs, is the thing to aim for. It’s a new world, with new rules, new demands, and new abundances.

So if you’re making forward motion amidst the overwhelming work to just navigate what is – give yourself a pat on the back.
