Performance = Ability x Motivation
Why does training fall short short on results?
You’ve been to plenty of training courses; 3 months later how much learning is being applied? Probably not much; suggesting training in isolation is ineffective.
On average, 87% of new skills are lost with 1 month. Closer analysis showed some individuals retained learned skills and some gained. The two exceptions had leaders who systematically coached the application of the skills by their people after the training. This validates what happens when training is regarded as a one-off event without any effort to ensure competent on-job application afterwards.
Why this happens can be simply explained with the equation “Performance = Ability x Motivation”.
Motivation refers to how willing people are to apply what they know (discretionary effort). Performance is maximised when people are both willing and able.
Training only deals with ability. It doesn’t address motivation to use - which is the realm of leadership.
