Perfectionism is it useful or not?
I guess if you’re someone that does perfectionism or likes to be perfect all the time then there is a reason for that being useful for you because every behaviour has a positive intention.
However, there are lots of consequences of perfectionism. If you are someone that does perfectionism or know someone who does it then this week’s video may help, and explains reasons for it and the consequences of perfectionist behaviour.
Why do people do perfectionism?
There are lots of causes why people doing perfectionism maybe a fear of doing something wrong, a fear of judgment, or a fear of disapproval these fears can also cause procrastination.
High parental expectations when you’re growing up can cause perfectionism. Wanting to please people, so maybe if you felt like you were invisible when you were younger and when you actually do something right people praise you and you just want to do more praise.
Maybe you want to be in control for example, you may feel you’ve lost control and you want to be back in control so you have to do everything perfect.
Low self-esteem can also lead to perfectionism. Moreover abuse, low self-worth, and the belief that self-worth is determined by achievements can lead to perfectionism.
We probably all know people that work endlessly to get what they perceive they want and to have approval from other people for a variety of these reasons. Often this is because of trauma either childhood trauma or other events that cause trauma which leads to all these beliefs and negative emotions.
The Consequences of being a Perfectionist
Perfectionism has a lot of consequences, while people may appear to be productive if they’re perfectionists it probably actually decreases productivity. In some cases it causes procrastination because if you’re worried about getting something right maybe you just don’t start.
It can cause impaired health because we know that there are mind and body connections so, if your cells are surrounded by beliefs that create perfectionism then you will have impaired health. You also probably have trouble with relationships and low self-esteem, and you stop living your life and stop being you.
