Let’s talk about something that many of us struggle with but don’t often address openly: perfectionism. You know, that nagging voice in your head that insists everything has to be just right, or it’s no good at all? That voice can be relentless, and trust me, I know it all too well.

For years, perfectionism had a tight grip on me. I was constantly striving for an unattainable standard, thinking that if everything wasn’t perfect, then somehow I wasn’t good enough. But you know what? It cost me dearly. It cost me my peace of mind, my happiness, and most painfully, it cost me my time—precious time that I’ll never get back, with family and friends who mattered most.

It took a lot for me to realize that this obsession with perfection wasn’t worth it. In fact, it didn’t serve me at all. Perfectionism wasn’t the key to my success; it was the barrier standing in the way of my true potential. When I finally let go of the fears tied to my need for perfection, everything shifted. And it’s because of that shift that I’m here, sharing this with you today.

Warning Signs You Might Be Struggling with Perfectionism:

Perfectionism can be sneaky. It might show up in ways you don’t even recognize at first. Here are some warning signs to watch out for:

  1. Procrastination: You delay starting or finishing tasks because you’re afraid they won’t be perfect.
  2. Overworking: You spend excessive time on projects, revising them endlessly, never feeling like they’re good enough to be final.
  3. Fear of Failure: You avoid new challenges or opportunities because you’re afraid you won’t succeed perfectly.
  4. Difficulty Delegating: You hesitate to delegate tasks to others, thinking they won’t meet your high standards.
  5. Negative Self-Talk: You constantly criticize yourself for not meeting your own expectations, no matter how unrealistic they may be.
  6. Avoiding Feedback: You shy away from receiving constructive feedback because it might highlight imperfections.
  7. All-or-Nothing Thinking: You see your efforts as either a complete success or an utter failure, with no middle ground.

Agree Nakisha Hicks, MBA, PHR - it’s such a misconception that perfectionism = high standards. We can hold onto those high standards AND let go of the shame, guilt and fear that drives perfectionism ??

What a fantastic read! Being a perfectionist can sometimes prevent you from leading a balanced life because you spend too much time and energy trying to achieve your ideal state of perfection. Because I have done it, I am aware. Trusting others around me has given me the peace of mind and confidence I need to complete tasks to the best of my abilities.
