The Perfect Video Interview Part Two - Feedback for Recruiters

During a Clubhouse event, I was inspired by a conversation about the new interview process that has evolved due to the pandemic. It made me look at my role in setting candidates up for success as a Talent Acquisition Leader.
The game has changed; instead of the pomp and circumstance of bringing our candidates into a lush corporate office and putting our best foot forward with company-branded gifts, as recruiters, we are now sending an email requesting to be invited into their homes.
What is our responsibility in this situation? We must practice grace and ensure we are not judging or making assumptions but still interviewing for the skills and experience necessary to do the job.
I reached out to a few of my friends who are currently interviewing to get their perspective, and based on their feedback, and I wanted to share some thoughts for recruiters and hiring managers to keep in mind:
- We use this technology every day, but they may not be familiar with our systems.
- Everyone has their own challenges, they are most likely different than ours, but until we have walked in their shoes, it is wrong to make assumptions.
- Not everyone has an array of personal technology choices (I can't tell you how many unemployed people I spoke to who are trying to decide if they should invest in a personal laptop).
- No matter how much money you make, we all have the opportunity to live the life we want and make personal decisions on how we spend our money. Not everyone puts their money into their surroundings.
In a world where we are already fighting to rise above our own conscious and unconscious biases, it is even more imperative that we act as any respectful guest would when invited into someone's home. We must leave the judgment at the door and show up as gracious guests appreciative of being invited into their personal and private spaces.
