The Perfect Project: Brixton
Sometimes we need to remember the design process and it’s helpful to look back at a project and chart its origins.
James Bartlett head of in house NPD at Innermost designed the Brixton module in response to a brief for a small slimline integrated LED fitting.
What followed as we ranged it was one of the most fabulous pieces of collaborative design it has ever been my privilege to see. The basic module is a gorgeous piece of engineering which James designed around a supplier we had close workings with.
James and his team then produced the Wall lamp option with several client briefs in mind.
During a design meeting to discuss cable lengths and styles we hung a cluster of prototypes and the idea came for a chandelier with double feed cables that could be ‘woven’ as a detail. The mock up worked really well and we showed the range at Milan last year and knew we had a winner.
In Milan our distributor in Canada Lightform suggested a long pendant option so we added the 50cm module, now very successful. Thanks Richard.
Back in the studio after Milan James and I had a ‘what if’ chat about changing the format of the chandelier and 2 wonderful and dogged interns were given sketches and a ladder. A week later they had reconfigured it 4 times as we had asked and 3 more times from their own ideas. We now had a single product that could be built into 7 chandeliers each in formats of varied heights upto 2.5 meters.
What James created and beautifully managed allowed an entire series of products to flow. There is more to come for Brixton and right now James and team are working on a series of new concepts.
