Perfect practice

Someone once asked the great cello player, Pablo Casals, why at 93 he still practiced three hours a day. He replied I’m starting to see some improvement.

I’m a broken record when coaching salespeople. If you want to be the best, to earn the most money, it’s just four simple steps:  

  1. Learn
  2. Practice
  3. Deliver
  4. Repeat

This process works for salespeople, and it will also work for any skill or profession, including yours. You cannot skip any of these steps if you want to be the best you can be. At 93, I’m sure Pablo Casals was learning new musical pieces every week.  

Build this 4-step process into a habit, and you will have the best chance of reaching your true potential. Got a system but feel like you’re not making progress? Keep going. Real success is never a straight line.

Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong.

One other note: It’s not practice that creates mastery. It’s perfect practice. Every time you do a repetitive task, you are burning that task into your memory. Do it incorrectly and that’s what your brain remembers. Make sure the last time you practice something you do it correctly. That will have the most long-lasting effect.

So, your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it, is to adopt this four-step approach to anything you want to want to improve upon. I guarantee you will see results.
