Bad mum.
It was my son, Truman’s 12th birthday last month and it’s always tricky as it falls in the Easter Holidays. All his mates go away, so “it’s not fair.”
My daughter was born on Christmas day in 2005, so I’m used to being blamed for the worst birth-timing EVER.
I used to feel guilty that I wasn’t a perfect parent. During lockdown I beat myself up about home schooling and trying (and failing) to get the kids away from screens.
Then I realised something, I took a drink of my own Kool-Aid.
Why was I trying to be perfect?
And then I came across this clip (watch below), which reminded me to stop trying to be perfect. It’s from the MUMSNET conference a while back when I spoke about ‘How to Get Your Mojo Back’ – for returners. I confessed my failures as a mother (& finding an empty Nutella jar in my daughter’s bed!).
It’s funny, we’re all “returners” now aren’t we?
We all feel our brains have gone to mush and we’re slightly rusty at being in the office with real people (with proper waist-bands and hard shoes!)
So, my big tip of the day for all returners.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE PERFECT. Hurrah. Go on repeat after me…
“I don’t have to be perfect”
“I only need to be 80% perfect”
And on that note -
