The Perfect Life

The Perfect Life

We are all consciously or subconsciously working towards building our perfect life.

Sometimes these may not be "designed" but a by product of our upbringing and we break into goals like "buying the right house and it often a sequence of a journey like get a qualification, get a job, find a partner, get married, kids, promotion; however in todays uncertain times it isn't always in this sequence because life gets in the way, be it illness, unemployment, divorce, war etc.

We usually feel that we will know that we have our perfect life because we will feel that we are in the right place and where we belong.

For many of us the key parameters are job, home, partner etc.

Are you in the right place and feel you belong?

  1. Job: Feeling that you are in the right job often involves a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Key indicators include:Enjoyment in what you do.Alignment of the job with your personal values and goals.A sense of accomplishment and growth.Healthy work-life balance.
  2. Community: Being part of the right community might mean:Feeling a sense of belonging and acceptance.Sharing common interests or values with others in the community.Feeling safe and supported.Opportunities for personal and social engagement.
  3. Location: Knowing you're in the right location can depend on:Personal preference for climate, landscape, and urban vs. rural settings.Proximity to family, friends, or essential services.Opportunities for career, education, or lifestyle.Overall quality of life, including safety, health care, and recreation.
  4. Partner: In a relationship, being with the right partner often involves:Mutual respect, trust, and understanding.Shared values and goals for the future.Good communication and conflict resolution.Emotional and physical intimacy.

Do you actually review if you are happy and content with these?

  • Self-Reflection: Regularly take time to reflect on your feelings and thoughts about your current situation. Journaling can be a helpful tool for this.
  • Feedback and Advice: Seek feedback from trusted friends, family, or mentors who can provide an outside perspective.
  • Professional Guidance: For career or relationship questions, professional counselors or career advisors can offer expert insights.
  • Trial and Error: Sometimes, experiencing different environments or situations is the best way to find out what feels right.

Often the only time we take time to review if we have the right goals or are on the right journey is when something goes wrong like unemployment, sickness, divorce etc and if we get overwhelmed we may even get depressed.

It is usually then that we reassess what we really want and spend time figuring out our "why"

Life is in stages and at each stage these "goals" and the mix of the perfect life and focus may change so instead of job prospects and promotion it might be about find the right partner or time with the children or travel, novelty and new experiences.

Life is about change and evolution and figuring out the next stage in our life.

Once we figure out

  • what kind of life we want,
  • why, and
  • who we want to be;

the how of life becomes a lot easier but it can be hard to figure it out.

Taking a holistic approach to life can be hard and asking yourself tough questions like what are my goals and why or who I am and want to be can feel overwhelming and when you ask yourself these questions it can feel very uncomfortable.

So, to help you assess things start with two simple exercises:

  1. Reflect on the key areas of your life – personal well-being, relationships, career, hobbies, and contributions to your community. In each area, rate your level of satisfaction on a scale from 1 to 10. Consider what aspects bring you joy and fulfillment, and which areas you feel are lacking or cause discontent. What changes or improvements would elevate these ratings closer to 10? Are there any consistent themes or needs across these areas that might indicate what is missing or what you truly value in your life?
  2. Imagine a day where everything goes exactly as you wish, from the moment you wake up to when you go to sleep. Describe this day in detail. What time do you wake up, and how do you feel? What activities are you doing, who are you with, and where are you? What are the sights, sounds, and smells around you? Consider what you eat, how you spend your time, and how you feel throughout the day. What makes this day perfect for you, and how does it end?

Now of course life is never perfect and once you actually have it, it is human nature to habituate and want something new and different.

a comprehensive visualisation of an ideal day, focusing on sensory details, emotions, and personal preferences, helps to create a vivid and meaningful picture of what a 'perfect day' looks for you.

Love to get your feedback and thoughts on this and the two exercises outline above.
