The perfect Kotor itinerary!

Have you ever been to Montenegro's Venetian-era walled city??If not.. Continue reading this article for a perfect 1 day itinerary of the wonderful city of Kotor.

When should you visit Kotor?

The answer is - pretty much all year round!

Our advice is that if you plan visit off season in autumn or spring (April-May and September-November) if you dislike crowded atmosphere and are more of a type to enjoy the beauty of places in a quiet atmosphere. Although have in mind that choosing to visit off season means a few attractions or businesses may be closed since a lot of Kotor attractions are open during high season only. We suggest you do a research of the activities you'd like to see and check if they will be open when you plan to come.

Visiting during high season may be a little inconvenient because the ctiy is crowded with tourists however it has a lot of advantages and you can always organize your activities according to how busy you might be on that particular day. Other than that it offers a lot of opportunities for sightseeing, activities (such as kayaking!) and indulging in a local gastronomic experience.

Whenever you plan your trip, this itinerary will be suitable for both off and high season months - so no need to worry!

So.. Let's start!

First and foremost - Old Town!

?When visiting Kotor, the Old Town is a site worth exploring. Built between the 12th and 14th century, this beautiful UNESCO site will leave a remarkable impression with its romantic streets, hidden cafes, local restaurants and shops, and museums.

Here are some of the stops we recommend visiting in the Old Town:

  • Old Town Square - Located right after you enter, this is one of the rare open areas within the Old Town walls. Restaurants and cafes are right on the square, with the main landmark being the noticeably older Clock Tower.
  • Kotor Cathedral - Also called the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, this impressive building was built in 1166 and is one of only two Roman Catholic cathedrals in the country. The building has undergone additions and repairs over the centuries, most notable in 2016 to repair damage from an earthquake in 1979.
  • Cats Museum - Kotor is somewhat of a home for animals - when you visit the Old Town you will probably be escorted by a number of beautiful cats. While you're there, check out the Cat Museum - a tribute to their fellow pawn residents! We're sure you'll find it interesting. The entrance fee is 1€.

Breathtaking Kotor Fortress

For many outdoor travelers, the highlight of their trip to Kotor is the journey up the mountainside to Kotor Fortress. Climbing up to the fortress, is a rite of passage each visitor should undertake regardless of the length of your stay. It is steep and a challenge, but the reward is so worth it! It should take no more than 45 minutes one way. We recommend going early, so that you still have a whole day to do other things!?

Last but definitely not least - gastronomy!

If you are visiting Kotor you would absolutely enjoy visiting the Lighthouse restaurant at Blue Kotor Bay.

The restaurant offers the most exuisite international and continental food, paired with both local and international wine selection.

When in Kotor, make sure to treat yourself to a beautiful lunch or dinner - it is our warm recommendation!
