Perfect Bedfellows: Hypnosis and Sleep

Perfect Bedfellows: Hypnosis and Sleep

Around the world, in beds, homes and hotel rooms people find themselves wide awake when they’d prefer to be in blissful slumber…

Why? Three patterns and aspects of the mind may show the problem and suggest solutions.

?

Sleeping with the Past

Our external world, whether actual or anticipated, can affect our inner world. Also, our function and sleep.

Without realizing it, people often bring their past to bed. Injustices by others, mistakes made, breakups, decisions… they can all pile in for a busy night of ruminating or regrets.

These situations and feelings may have happened today, or ten years ago (with the drama playing out night after sleepless night).

We forget that our “hindsight” didn’t have the insight, information or resources at the time, and we were making the best choices with the experience we had then.

If we could do it all again, we’d probably make some different decisions – which makes our mistakes forgivable. Hypnosis can help travel through time to get to feelings in the past to learn the lessons for good and let them go.

?

Sleeping with Social “Norms”

“Successful people only need 4 hours sleep” and other social media ideas shame us for needing our personal amount of time to rest.

Being a “super mom” or “side-hustle maverick” prioritizes others or actions over our own health and wellbeing.

These messages skew our expectations and give us the impression that we always need to be “on”! So, the mind starts to see turning off (sleeping) as nasty habit rather than a renewal experience.

Working with the deeper mind allows a reconnection with a sense of self, our true needs and wants. It allows us to reject any misguided or unhelpful misperceptions or boundary violations by others, so we can work and rest at our personal best.

?

Sleeping with a Habit

Just as an old song on the radio can transport you to an earlier time and place, the associative powers of the subconscious are legendary.

If you’ve had a string of bad nights, you know what I mean. We dread “failing” in sleep even before we go to bed.

The constant chatter usually focuses on our inability to slumber and our expectations for a bad day that follows.

The “sleep math” (if I fall asleep right this second, I’ll only have 2 hours and 20 minutes before my alarm…) hones our mind to limitations and lack.

Repeated over and over this, creates a habit that gets us what we “don’t” want – getting better at our stressing and worrying night after night.

But working with, not against, the subconscious mind allows not only a change of perspective, but also internal tools to support a restful bedtime.
