Perceptual Positioning - A road to success….

I am not an expert of NLP but thanks to “Farhad Karamally” and “Arsalan Larik” for making me familiar with this topic through their amazing play shop. So while attending this play shop, I came across with an amazing idea of sharing one of the helpful tools of NLP for building harmonious relationship.

We often come across this term “Perception” in our day to day conversations which defines our way of thinking and we mostly use it to justify our self in odd or contrasting situations. In fact, most of our conflicts begin with the idea of difference in perception towards something which may later results in arguments and holding grudges for life.

So the question is how would you manage or deal with such situations?

In NLP, it starts with using the methodology “Perceptual positioning”. Perceptual positions is a form of modelling that allows us to step into somebody else’s shoes, and see what they see, hear what they hear, and feel what they feel.

Through this model, you not only step into another’s shoes but also take four different positions:

1ST Position:   Our own point of view.

2ND Position:  Others point of view.

3RD Position: As an observer.

4TH Position: As a coach.

Thinking about any situation in the same old way is not difficult for us as we are used to it. We define things in the light of our own experiences and past events. It’s all about our own feelings and emotions towards something or someone.

2nd position in perpetual positioning is different from the first one as it requires you to totally disregard your idea of the world by looking at things from client’s end. Describing things from others point of view takes courage and expansion of our comfort zone. Even continuous practice of perceptual positioning results in building qualities like empathy and compassion.  In NLP your state also plays a crucial role in defining your story, so is the case with perceptual positioning. You have to physically move from one location to another location like moving from one chair to another to support the idea of dissociating yourself with the help of spatial anchors. Just by changing your spatial location, you can actually change your state and start seeing things from other’s side.

Now comes the role of an observer, he/she is someone who is good at noticing obvious things by bringing fresh insights without taking into consideration the feelings and experience of first two positions. His/her role is more about observing the complex patterns and how the first person interacts with the second one by gaining an impartial insight into the situation.

Fourth position is more about giving constructive feedback by keeping in view the situation and work towards a win-win situation.

Consistent use of this model followed by intelligent questions is the key to success and can aid us in speeding up the process by making a smooth shift from one role to another and make the application of this model more effective.

However, you can enhance your skills as “ Certified NLP Associate Practitioner Level” by attending this amazing play shop “ IN-IT” by funverks for an amazing transformational journey.

Hi Attia, Very well explained, while reading through your post a thought came up.. until and unless you do not know the person well you cannot be in their shoes (that might be a limiting belief)..
