Perception Shapes Value, but Strategy Shapes Success

As I dive deeper into the world of strategy during my first year, I’ve come to realize how perception and facts often walk different paths, yet both play a critical role in decision-making.
Take this classic example: When shoes were first introduced to India, some argued there was no potential because “nobody wears shoes.” Others saw a massive opportunity because “nobody wears shoes.” Same fact, two perspectives.
What does this teach us? Value is always perceived—it’s how you interpret the same reality that defines your course of action. But one fact is absolute: the occurrence of events doesn’t change, only the lens through which we view them does.
This brings me to my first lesson in strategy: a business must take a stance—one that aligns with its environment and industry fit. Strategy is not just about reacting to circumstances; it’s about making deliberate choices and creating a path forward.
Whether the market seems daunting or promising, it’s the lens we adopt and the strategic stance we take that can transform challenges into opportunities. As I continue my journey, I’m learning that great strategies are rooted in understanding the interplay of facts, perceptions, and deliberate positioning.
To my fellow learners and practitioners, what’s your favorite example of how perception has shaped strategy in business? Let’s discuss!
