Perception of Importance
As entrepreneurs, we strive to achieve goals both personally and professionally. Typically, the satisfaction associated with meeting these goals is short lived, and subsequently replaced with new goals. This road can often be filled with disappointment, stress, and discontent without the correct frame of mind while striving for success (whatever that may be). This past 18 months, I found myself periodically falling into this mental trap while in the trenches of growing Trendy Butler.
During some recent internal reflection, I asked myself...."what can I do to enjoy the ride even more?" This complex question was answered during an eye opening experience and visit to Colombia. Let me preface this experience with the backdrop; earlier this year my good friend, partner, and philanthropist Ryan A. introduced me to a recovering Wall Street Banker named Andy Stein. My now, new good friends Andy and his lovely wife Dilia have one obsessive mission; bring joy, love, and help to as many kids in orphanages across the globe as possible. Through his organization (Orphan Starfish Foundation) Andy and Dilia help over 10,000 kids by supporting 28 orphanages in countries all over the world.
Our journey begins with Andy and Dilia taking us to an orphanage in Bogota, Colombia named "Amparo de Ni?os Granja Loyola" (The Protection of Children). The 65+ kids we met their were not only smart, but well mannered, and thirsty to learn. The hair on my arms rise when I think of the courage these kids have. I won't get into the specific details, but harsh abuse is typically associated with each kid's past. You would never know it though when meeting with these amazing kids. The Bogota staff had an incredible structure to the facility which showed in every nook and corner. Every second of every day was filled with class, instruction, sports, arts, and everything a young mind could desire. The house staff makes sure these amazing kids embrace every opportunity to learn and get ready for life past 18 years of age. And the result is success! Yes, success!! Most kids involved with the Bogota facility move onto college, stable jobs, marriage, and a productive life. That said, a big reason kids thrive at this amazing place is because of the love and support Orphan Starfish Foundation provides.
The next day we visited a place named "La solución está en tus manos" (The Solution is in Your Hands) located in Choco, Colombia. This visit was just as special....however, for totally different reasons. More back drop; Choco is the poorest, most dangerous state in Columbia. It is run by crime, drug lords, and is lawless in certain parts. The local sentiment is that the rest of Columbia has turned its back on the people here, and wants to forget about this place. This orphanage was suppose to have 300 kids, but word got out in the community we were coming and over 600 kids were waiting for us upon our arrival. When we arrived, I heard crazy cheering in the small 500 square foot room which all the kids were crammed into. The cheering was for us. Surreal. When we walked into the room, the kids went absolutely crazy with joy, laughter, and curiosity. Apparently, these kids have never seen a person of our skin color ever in their life. After Andy did his magic show, and Dilia sang a beautiful song, we moved to the dirt soccer field to pass out clothes. With the help of local police and other volunteers we passed out clothes to kids that were in desperate need of anything and everything.
This was a totally different experience than Bogota. These kids having almost nothing. Most of the kids in Choco (as young as 5 years old) are already involved in gangs, or on there way to being in a gang. Sadly, we did not have enough items to give each kid something. The atmosphere was frantic; sometimes brief squabbles broke out over who would get the tee shirt or hat. The majority of feelings shared however were love, joy, and thankfulness. These kids don't have the same opportunities that the children in Bogota have. Unfortunately, most of these kids will live in extreme poverty and violence the majority of their life.
Reflecting on this trip, it seems trivial at times what I consider to be a"problem". My conviction upon returning home is focused on perception and having an optimum state of mind. It felt odd leaving Colombia, and receiving thanks and appreciation for our visit. We got more out of this trip than words can describe.
Gratitude.
