Perception - A different point of view!
I have always been intrigued by the human brain and what it is capable of. Every day our brains develop without us even being aware that it is occurring. There are processes continuously molding every decision we make, every opinion we form. We use logic and emotion like carving tools, carefully chiseling out who we are as sentient beings. This is all based on what we have witnessed, and an instantaneous and immediate reflection of what we have witnessed in the past. From those actions that occur in an instance during the witnessing of an event, humans create a memory, an opinion, a thought. Absolutely amazing to me!
What truly makes each and every one of us different is how we perceive every event that we witness throughout our lives. Though we may have seen an event from the same physical standpoint, the neurons in our brain utilize past events deep in the limbic tissue of the brain. This particular portion of the brain's Limbic system, called the Amygdala, stores emotional events for us to continuously reflect on without even knowing we're doing it! It is just one of the actions of the brain to process all sensory data (sight, touch, taste, smell), and subject it to the Limbic system, where we instantaneously form our "opinion" of the event that was witnessed. Even when the event was witnessed by two people at the same location, perceptions were different. So, the very perplexing and yet amazing fact is... no one person will ever perceive something the same as the other. No matter what the circumstance. It is truly amazing what we are capable of!
This post, though it is very short considering the subject matter, was just something that has always fascinated me. To think there is an object inside my brain about the size of an almond that instantaneously records and reflects on everything I have ever experienced throughout my life, and forms who I am as a human in the future!
