The Perceived Value Conundrum: A Lesson from My 8-Year-Old Son

How the same item can have varying values, and why it's essential to choose the right audience

As a proud father, I've seen, Hayden (8-years-old as of this week), embark on a fantastic journey of creativity, exploring the world of storytelling. He started the journey by his own accord and motivation.

Although his story contains the expected grammar errors and occasional misplaced words of an 8-year old, his intentions and thoughtfulness amazed me. It actually inspired me to write this week's article:

There's an insightful lesson about perceived value here.

So, let's dive into the world of pricing, storytelling, and how a single item can hold different values for different people.

Picture this: A pair of golden socks adorned with tiny diamonds, retailing for $1000??. To a fashion enthusiast or a foot fetish, these socks might be the epitome of luxury and style. However, to a minimalist or someone with no interest in fashion, the socks hold little to no value.

The same item, with two entirely different perceived values – a phenomenon that's both fascinating and applicable to various aspects of life.

Now, back to Hayden and his storytelling adventure: He recently shared his imaginative story with two teachers.

One teacher focused solely on the mistakes, bluntly criticizing his writing.

The other praised Hayden for his creativity and clever ideas, offering constructive feedback and encouraging him to continue.

Imagine how these two scenarios affected Hayden's motivation and confidence. Had he only received negative feedback, he might have given up on writing altogether.

On the other hand, the positive reinforcement from the second teacher not only boosted his self-esteem but also provided guidance for improvement.

This brings us back to the golden socks example. The first teacher's feedback was like offering the socks to someone who sees no value in them. In contrast, the second teacher appreciated the potential (or "value") in Hayden's writing and offered support to refine it further.

We can't help people if we judge them – it's essential to recognize and support the intentions and potential behind their actions.

Sometimes, the best way to guide someone is to highlight the value they bring to the table, even if it's not immediately apparent. The key is to find the right person to share that value with – because not everyone will appreciate those golden socks.

In conclusion, Hayden's experience with storytelling and the varying responses from his teachers is a perfect analogy for understanding perceived value in real life.

It's crucial to remember that the worth of something can differ from person to person, and it's our job to find the right audience for our value.

So next time you're faced with a potential golden sock situation, remember Hayden's story and consider how different perspectives can impact the perceived value of your offering.

That is an awesome question James Blanchett, GAICD . And a very hard one to answer :) If you don't mind I would want to think om that for a day or so and come back to you. I would also like to post it out as a post so we can get more opinions. Are you OK with that?
