Peppa Pig versus financial forecasting - help!
As schools, nurseries, and childminders closed their doors last week in line with the government lockdown, I have to admit that the thought of spending more time with my family was rather nice and a welcome change from the daily commuter grind. But, as our child plays in the sitting room (where my wife is also trying desperately to wfh), dividing his time between watching Peppa Pig, tearing around on his balance bike and building his beloved Brio train track, I wonder how the balance between working from home and good parenting will pan out over the next few months?
Let's be honest, work is work and requires attention and headspace, not to mention quiet at times. Reviewing forecasts, writing emails, and making zoom calls takes focus, so the intermittent requests to help build our child's train track or the plaintive cry for the seventh snack of the day while heartwarming, means I break my work focus. Maybe for the multi-taskers out there, this is not a problem, but as I enjoy the thinking and focus time my work requires to have this interruption can sometimes be tricky.
There is of course also the slight feeling of guilt that accompanies these interludes, in that I don't have the time to sit down and always interact more with our son. But, work beckons and in these strange times, I am grateful for the ability to keep working and also the distraction.
I'm confident over the next few weeks we will continue to find our groove and we are enjoying all the positives that come with spending more time together as a family. Eating every meal together is one; something I don't think we are ever able to do save for Christmas and some weekends. Not tearing around to various activities or meetings, no arduous commute into work and making every single bed and bath-time. With our three becoming four in the next couple of months, this has given our family the opportunity to be together properly before our unit changes for good.
This balancing act is one of the most curious challenges I'm facing right now as a parent and business owner - how to divide my day between providing a positive home-schooling environment for our child, and, being a pro-active business owner who knows that right now it's the business and my clients who need my undivided attention. I know and take comfort from the fact that I am not alone in that and I'm sure many parents are finding themselves in the same situation. I'd be keen to hear how other parents are managing to balance their children's education and a productive workflow?
