Priorities for CEOs in the Second Half of 2023
As we move into the second half of 2023, leaders find themselves navigating an ever-evolving landscape. From ongoing pandemic aftershocks - think inflation, WFH headaches, cost of living - to geopolitical uncertainties, the road ahead is anything but smooth.
Over the last 3 months I've met and interviewed close to 40 CEOs and countless other C-suites, and in my findings, I explore some key priorities for the year ahead.
1. Resilience
Resilience has become more than just a buzzword; it's the bedrock upon which organisations can thrive in challenging times. It's become abundantly clear that leaders must out of necessity embrace a resilient mindset, fostering adaptability and agility across their teams. Investing in contingency planning, risk management, and crisis response capabilities will be crucial to weathering the storms ahead. Top talent is the best response to any volatility. It is clear now more than ever that a lot of effort is being put into securing the best talent in the most value-driving roles, because with the best teams, good things happen - even during the toughest of times.
2. Courage
Navigating uncertainties requires bold decision-making. Leaders must demonstrate courage in charting new territories and embracing innovation. Daring to experiment and fail fast will be necessary to remain competitive. Equally important is instilling a culture of psychological safety within the organisation, encouraging employees to bring new ideas without fear of repercussions.
3. Technology
Embracing technology is no longer optional; it's imperative for survival. From AI-driven automation to data analytics, technology has the potential to revolutionise processes and create new business models. This doesn't only start from the top, it needs to be ingrained into the DNA of the organisation. A question that always pops up - "Is there a direct link to the value being created by this new technology?" The second question is then "do we have the talent and the right operating road map to deliver the value?"
4. Net Zero / ESG
Climate change concerns have elevated sustainability to the top of the agenda. CEOs are feeling a lot of pressure to prioritise their organisation's path to net zero emissions. Many boards, still conservative in their thinking, are being challenged on reframing the issue not as a cost but rather as an opportunity. From supply chain optimisations to energy-efficient operations, integrating sustainability into business strategies is no longer a corporate social responsibility checkbox, but a strategic imperative for long-term viability.
5. Talent in Transformation
Amidst the rapid pace of change, talent remains a critical asset. CEOs must lead the charge in reskilling and upskilling their workforce to adapt to evolving job demands. Emphasising employee well-being and work-life balance will foster a culture of loyalty and productivity. Getting out of a mindset of months or years in roles as the basis for promotion and more into impact delivered, to accelerate the career path of somebody really making a big difference. The Hybrid working world is here to stay so how do we create a new set of cultures and norms? There doesn't seem to be an answer but what is clear is that those who are brave enough to lean into experimenting will maximise productivity and those who go back to the old ways will miss a trick.

6. Building a Collaborative Ecosystem
In an interconnected world, collaboration is key. Leaders must actively seek strategic partnerships, and alliances, and engage with industry peers to tackle shared challenges. Leveraging ecosystem synergies can lead to greater market penetration, resource optimisation, and even open doors to untapped revenue streams.
The year ahead...
The remainder of 2023 promises both uncertainties and opportunities. To navigate this complex landscape effectively, leaders must remain adaptable - embracing resilience, courage, technology, net zero commitments, talent development, and fostering collaborative ecosystems will be vital to success.
