First month

I can hardly believe that it's been just over a month since I embarked on this exciting journey of starting a new business with?PeopleSolved.

The journey so far has been exhilarating, but also exhausting and challenging, as I find myself being pulled in different directions.

I've been trying to reflect on the lessons learned during the past few weeks, but I am conscious of reminding myself of the importance of celebrating successes and identifying areas of improvement.

Some interesting thoughts here:

1?? Opening a bank account has been one of the most stressful experiences I've had to endure. The amount of red tape was infuriating, and it makes me wonder how scammers are able to open accounts so easily.

2?? Having a good accountant in the initial stages has been a lifesaver.

3?? Building my network has been everything. The majority of my time is spent in coffee shops, video calls, pounding the pavements, and building relationships with potential clients and candidates.

4?? Surrounding myself with people who have done it before has been incredible in providing leadership and guidance.?Simon Hill,?Avron Goodman,?and Richard Carter?have been instrumental in this regard.

5?? Developing my brand has been easier said than done. It's actually quite a scary process, and I feel like it's going to be a continuous journey that requires a lot of tweaking.

6?? Staying up to date with industry trends is crucial.

7?? Responsibility is key. Everyone says it takes time, but as a competitive person, I sometimes need to take a step back and realise that Rome wasn't built in a day. I am thankful to the clients who are taking a chance on me, as their support now will never be forgotten.

8?? Imposter syndrome is something I'm still trying to navigate. However, if anything from the past month has shown me, it's that "I've got this."

9?? Time commitments have been a real challenge. Between school runs, family commitments, extracurricular activities, staying healthy, client meetings, candidate interviews, admin, payroll, expenses, emails, and more, it feels like I'm burning the candle at both ends.

?? Stress is an everyday occurrence, and I am constantly on the lookout for signs of burnout, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Walks along the creek have been a tremendous help in this regard.

Really valuable development lessons and they've taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and the power of a strong support system.

I am so grateful for the opportunities that have come my way, and I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Current Market trends

You've probably noticed it or at least started to feel that something is not quite right out there in the Job Market. There seems to be a little trend happening at the moment.

Our North American colleagues experienced it at the beginning of this year and I'm starting to feel it now here in Australia.

There is a definite slowdown in hiring trends.

My?LinkedIn?account manager for the APAC region confirmed that like-for-like hiring over the last 12 months (Feb 2022 - Feb 2023) was down by 20% in Australia. This was research done by their economists and internal data analysts.

It's nothing compared to the UK at 25% and the USA at just over 30% but it's a worrying trend that might continue for the next 6 months.

So if you are on the market now here are some tips:

  • Stay positive
  • Be open to different types of jobs
  • Update your skills
  • Never turn down a coffee
  • Be creative and look for ways to stand out from other job seekers
  • Take care of yourself

Don't be afraid to seek support from friends and family or professional help if needed.

Remember that downturns are temporary and there are always opportunities for those who are persistent and adaptable.

Well written Verge, very inciteful. I am sure you will succeed in the new business as you come across as a driven person. Ensure you keep an eye on the “burnout” signs. As for the market trends, I also feel the next 6-9 months may be difficult in Australia, however certainly not as bad as Europe and the USA.
